The Difference Between Stepping Stones and Water

When crossing a stepping stone over a river, the gap between the water and the stones deeply impacts our hearts.

While the stepping stones appear the same when the water is overflowing or low, the feeling is profoundly different.

This visual difference clouds our judgment.

When the stones are elevated and provide ample space between them and the water, we step forward without hesitation. Our feet won't get wet, and the stones are clearly visible, giving us the confidence that we're safe.

Conversely, when water rises over the stepping stones, the situation changes. The stones are hard to see, and the waves lapping at our ankles constantly shake our spirits. The fear of "what if I slip?" overwhelms us, and even though the path is short, we hesitate for a long time.

Isn't life similar?

When there's a safe, exposed foothold, everyone crosses confidently. The path is clear, so courage isn't required. However, as the water rises beneath our feet and the gaps between the stones become uncertain, we are called upon to exert even more courage and resolve.

Perhaps the stepping stones of life are always half-submerged in water. The key isn't waiting for the water to "dry," but rather developing the strength to trust your footing and step forward even amidst the current. The stepping stones remain in their original form.

징검다리와 물의 높이 차이

강 위에 놓인 징검다리를 건널 때, 물과 돌 사이의 간격은 우리의 마음을 크게 흔듭니다.징검다리에 물이 넘칠때나 물의 높이가 낮을 때나 징검다리는 똑같지만 느낌의 차이는 큽니다.시각적인 차이가 판단을 흐리게 하지요.

돌이 높이 솟아 있어 물과 여유가 있으면, 우리는 망설임 없이 발을 내딛습니다. 발이 젖을 일도 없고, 돌이 분명하게 보여 안전하다는 확신이 생기기 때문입니다.

반대로, 물이 징검다리 위로 잘름잘름 차오르면 상황은 달라집니다. 돌이 제대로 보이지 않고, 발목에 닿는 물결이 자꾸만 마음을 흔듭니다. “혹시 미끄러지면 어떡하지?”라는 두려움이 앞서면서, 건너는 길은 짧아도 한참을 망설이게 됩니다.

사람의 인생도 이와 비슷하지 않을까요.

안전하게 드러난 발판이 있을 때는 누구나 자신 있게 건너갑니다. 길이 또렷하니 용기가 필요하지 않습니다. 그러나 발 아래로 물이 차오르고, 돌과 돌 사이가 불확실할수록 우리는 더 많은 용기와 결심을 요구받습니다.

어쩌면 삶의 징검다리는 늘 물에 반쯤 잠겨 있는지도 모릅니다. 중요한 건 ‘물이 없기를’ 기다리는 게 아니라, 물살 속에서도 발판을 믿고 내딛는 힘을 기르는 일일 것입니다.

징검다리의 원래 모습은 그대로입니다.
